Philosophy of Music Education (private lessons)
Students can expect to be given a strong exposure to classical music, technique, and music theory-education as I believe this provides the strongest background for all avenues of music that could eventually be pursued. Each student has individual abilities and preferences therefore I encourage each one to discover and play other styles of music also, including popular styles. Beginners, depending on the age of the student, will use one of the many well-written contemporary series currently being published. These curriculums provide a well-balanced start in technique, note reading and solo material. Upon completion of the elementary curriculum students begin a carefully graded and personalized study of a variety of music tailored to their specific needs and preferences. Individuals interested in improvisation, accompanying, or hymn playing are developed in these areas also. I strongly believe in the value of the individual and strive to respect all students for their differences, helping them to become the best they can be.
About my Family
Music is a big part of our family life. My husband Tim has a college minor-concentration in music; plays the piano, French horn, guitar, occasionally sings professionally, and currently teaches private lessons. He has been a pastor of worship and music and currently works in technology. Tim has been an officer in the EAHS Music Club and was an active volunteer for the music and arts department for the 20 years that our girls attended the Elizabethtown schools. He teaches private lessons for brass instruments, and coaches for voice auditions. We have three daughters, Candis, Courtney, and Carissa. Our girls have all been involved in musical and theater pursuits all through school and college. Between the three of them, our girls play the following instruments: piano, flute, piccolo, violin, cello, French horn, trumpet, baritone, and trombone. Their musical activities include: EAHS drum majors for the marching band, theater involving roles in school and community musicals, chorus, concert band, wind ensemble, jazz band, PMEA honors band, District band, District orchestra, Districts and Regional Chorus, Susquehanna Youth Choral, numerous recitals and church musical events. Our youngest daughter, Carissa is currently pursuing a music career studying opera and specializing as a coloratura soprano in Frankfurt, Germany. We love the beauty added to our lives through music and the arts and love to share that with others!
